The question every first-time engagement ring buyer asks: how early do I need to start? Answer: it depends on whether you’re buying ready-to-ship, made-to-order, or fully custom, and how complex the decisions get. Below is the full timeline, from initial browsing to the box in your pocket, so you can work backward from your proposal date with no stress.

For the price framework, see our budget guide. For ring size without her knowing, see sizing tricks.

The short answer

  • Ready-to-ship: 1 week before proposal is safe. 3 days is cutting it but workable.
  • Made-to-order (most settings + lab-grown stone combinations): 4-6 weeks lead time.
  • Fully custom design: 6-10 weeks depending on complexity.
  • Natural diamond sourcing can add 1-2 weeks for specific stone hunting.
  • Sizing decisions + finger measurement: allow an extra 1-2 weeks if you’re using stealth methods.

The full backwards timeline from proposal day

8-10 weeks before: explore and settle on category

This is when you decide the big categorical questions:

Key Insight: None of this requires action yet, just browsing, saving favorites on Pinterest, reading articles. Most of this stage happens in 30-60 minute sessions over 2-3 weeks.

6-8 weeks before: ring size and lock in specs

Now you commit to the details:

  • Get her ring size. Stealth methods: borrow an existing ring from her right hand and trace it, or use our free printable sizer discreetly. See stealth sizing tricks.
  • Finalize carat, cut, color, clarity. Target the sweet spot for your budget (usually VS1-F, Excellent cut). See our 4 C’s guide.
  • Choose the setting design. Solitaire, halo, three-stone, specific metal and karat.
  • Check delivery estimate. On the product page, we show the expected ship-by date. Add 2-3 days for delivery.

5-7 weeks before: place the order

For made-to-order (most Diavlia engagement rings):

  • Place the order. Our made-to-order cycle is 3-5 weeks production + 2-5 days shipping = roughly 4-6 weeks total.
  • Confirm all details before final payment. Size, specs, metal, setting, engraving if any.
  • Get a written confirmation. You’ll receive an order confirmation email with expected ship date. Save it.

For ready-to-ship pieces:

  • You can wait until 1 week before. Most of our ready-to-ship inventory delivers in 2-5 business days via insured FedEx.
  • Confirm stock before counting on it. Some pieces are single-unit availability; popular sizes sell quickly.

2-3 weeks before: final preparation

  • Track the shipment. Made-to-order rings typically ship 3-5 days before your expected delivery date.
  • Plan where to meet the delivery. Signature-required means you need to be available. Schedule with FedEx if needed.
  • Think about the proposal itself. Location, time, who you want present, what you’ll say. Having the ring in hand doesn’t automatically make this easier; start thinking about it early.
  • Contact us if plans change. If your proposal date moves, we can often expedite or delay shipping to match.

1 week before: ring arrives, final check

  • Inspect the ring. Unbox carefully (keep the box pristine for the proposal). Verify IGI certificate matches product listing. Examine the ring under good light.
  • Try the size fit. Many proposers put the ring on their own pinky to estimate size. If clearly wrong, you have a few days to request a resize (usually 48-72 hour turnaround on a rush).
  • Hide it well. Home hiding places that work: inside a shoe you don’t wear, inside a book you’re "reading," in a friend’s or family member’s house.
  • Photograph it. For insurance purposes later, take clear photos from multiple angles.

Proposal day

  • Ring in your pocket. Check three times in the hour before.
  • Present the box. Most people open the box rather than the ring directly; the signature box is designed for this.
  • Take a photo right after. The ring on her hand, with the light of that specific moment. This photo becomes a memory piece.

Complication: how soon after proposal can you resize?

If the ring doesn’t fit perfectly at proposal:

  • First resize within 14 days of delivery is complimentary. We provide a pre-paid insured return label.
  • Turnaround: 5-10 business days. Most of this is shipping; the resize itself takes 24-48 hours.
  • Some settings can’t be resized. Full eternity bands, certain very complex pavé designs. Diavlia notes this on the product page if applicable.
  • If resize isn’t possible, we replace the ring in the correct size at the original price. Longer turnaround (3-5 weeks) since it’s made to order.

Key insight: If you know the proposal is coming but haven’t pinned a date, order ready-to-ship or a popular made-to-order design EARLY. Having the ring in hand for 2-6 weeks is perfectly fine, it’s not a spoiled-quickly asset. Storage requires only a drawer and some patience.

Seasonal timing: does month matter?

Three considerations:

  • Lab-grown prices are stable year-round. No seasonal price drops or peaks meaningful to a typical buyer.
  • Holiday rush (mid-November to December) slows down delivery by 1-2 weeks as FedEx capacity fills. Plan accordingly for holiday-season proposals.
  • Spring proposal season (March-May) is highest volume. Popular designs sometimes go on 2-3 week backorder. Order earlier than normal if shopping in these months.

What if you’re under time pressure?

Last-minute proposal scenarios and how to handle them:

Less than 1 week before

Ready-to-ship pieces only. Expedited overnight shipping ($40-80 extra) can get a ring to you in 1-2 business days. Select from our Ready-to-Ship collection, not made-to-order.

2-3 weeks before

Key Insight: Ready-to-ship is safe; made-to-order is cutting it close on most designs. Prioritize designs with 3-4 week production time rather than 5-6 weeks.

4-5 weeks before

Comfortable for made-to-order, tight for custom. If custom is required, contact us to confirm the specific design’s timeline.

6+ weeks before

Full flexibility. Any design, any spec, comfortable buffer.

Ready-to-Ship vs Made-to-Order

Ready in 2-5 days or crafted in 4-6 weeks. Both IGI-certified, both with Lifetime Upgrade Program and lifetime warranty.

Frequently asked questions

1. How far in advance should I buy an engagement ring?

For made-to-order: 6-8 weeks before the proposal. For ready-to-ship: 1-2 weeks. This gives buffer for sizing, shipping, and any unexpected delays.

2. What if the ring arrives after my planned proposal date?

Contact us immediately. We can often expedite production or shipping. Worst case, we provide a refund and reorder in the correct timeframe.

3. Can I speed up a made-to-order ring?

Sometimes, depending on design complexity and current workshop load. Rush production ($100-200 fee) can shave 1-2 weeks off typical turnaround. Contact us before ordering to confirm availability.

4. What if I haven’t picked a date yet?

Buy anyway. Holding a finished engagement ring in a drawer for 2-3 months is fine. The ring doesn’t depreciate or go stale. Having it in hand takes a massive variable out of your proposal planning.

5. Should I order earlier for a specific holiday proposal (Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day)?

Yes. These high-demand windows see 1-2 week delays on made-to-order pieces. Order 8+ weeks ahead for December 24, February 14, etc.

6. What if I need to hide the ring from my partner for weeks?

Normal. Most proposers hide rings for 1-8 weeks without issue. Discreet places: inside a sneaker you don’t wear, with a trusted friend, inside a locked box at home, at your parents’ house.

7. What about financing, does that add to the timeline?

Shop Pay Installments and Affirm approvals happen at checkout, no added timeline. Approval is instant or within minutes. See your application at checkout.

8. Is there a "best time of year" to shop?

Not really. Lab-grown prices are stable. Avoid mid-November to December (shipping delays from holiday rush) and March-May (engagement season backorders) if you have flexibility. Otherwise, any month works.
