Attribute by Attribute
Eight differences that matter
Composition
Diamond
Pure carbon (C), the same element as graphite, reorganized into the hardest crystal structure known.
Moissanite
Silicon carbide (SiC), a completely different chemical compound, originally discovered in a meteorite.
Hardness
Diamond
10 on Mohs, the benchmark for hardness, resistant to everyday wear for generations.
Moissanite
9.25–9.5 on Mohs, very hard but softer than diamond. More prone to surface scuffing over decades.
Brilliance
Diamond
Refractive index 2.42. Classic white brilliance with balanced fire and scintillation.
Moissanite
Refractive index 2.65. More dispersive, often described as “disco-ball” or “rainbow” fire. Distinct look.
Appearance
Diamond
Subtle, sophisticated sparkle. White light return dominates over colored flashes.
Moissanite
Very showy sparkle. Strong colored flashes in sunlight. Some people love this; others find it obvious.
Price (1 ct equivalent)
Diamond
Lab-grown: typically $800–1,600. Mined: $3,000–8,000.
Moissanite
$200–600 per comparable size. Cheaper than lab-grown diamond.
Certification
Diamond
IGI, GIA, independent grading on the 4 C’s, verifiable reports.
Moissanite
Occasionally GRA-graded but standards are less rigorous. No universally-accepted grading system.
Heirloom Value
Diamond
Holds cultural and emotional weight. Passed down for generations, widely recognized.
Moissanite
Newer on the market. Less cultural recognition as an heirloom piece.
Resale
Diamond
Secondary market exists, though retail→resale drop is significant for both stones.
Moissanite
Very limited secondary market.
Common Questions
Real answers
Is moissanite a fake diamond?+
No — moissanite is its own real gemstone, not a diamond simulant like cubic zirconia. It just happens to look similar to the untrained eye. Calling moissanite “fake” is as wrong as calling sapphire “fake” because it isn’t ruby.
Can people tell the difference between moissanite and diamond?+
In direct sunlight, yes — moissanite flashes rainbow colors much more than diamond does. Indoors or in dim light, it’s harder to tell. Many jewelers can spot it with a loupe due to the double-refraction pattern moissanite exhibits.
Why does Diavlia only sell diamonds?+
We believe lab-grown diamonds deliver the best combination of price, durability, appearance, and long-term value. Moissanite is a fine gem, but it’s a different stone — if you want its specific look, buy from a specialist. If you want the classic diamond look at an accessible price, we’ve built the whole store around that.
Which one is more sparkly?+
Moissanite returns more light per unit area — technically, it’s brighter. But “more sparkly” isn’t always better. Diamond’s sparkle is balanced and calm; moissanite’s is intense and colorful. It’s a taste question.
Will moissanite scratch over time?+
Slower than most gems, but faster than diamond. On a 30-year timeline, a moissanite ring worn daily will show more surface wear than the equivalent diamond — especially on the corners of emerald-cut or princess-cut stones.
If diamond sounds right…
Every DIAVLIA piece is set with IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds — the classic look, at 40–70% less than mined.
