What Is an Eternity Band?
An eternity band features diamonds set continuously around the entire circumference of the ring — an unbroken circle of brilliance symbolizing eternal love and commitment. This continuous line of diamonds catches and reflects light from every angle, creating a sparkle that's visible no matter how the hand moves or the ring rotates on the finger.
Full Eternity vs Half Eternity
Full Eternity
Diamonds encircle the entire band — top, sides, and bottom. The visual impact is stunning: sparkle from every angle, no matter how the ring sits on your finger. However, full eternity bands come with practical considerations. Resizing is extremely difficult (sometimes impossible) because altering the band means removing and resetting diamonds. This means precise sizing at purchase is critical.
Half Eternity
Diamonds cover the top half of the band (the visible portion when wearing), with plain metal completing the bottom. Half eternity bands offer several advantages: they're easier to resize, more comfortable (no diamonds pressing against adjacent fingers), and more accessible since they use fewer stones. From the wearer's perspective — looking down at their hand — a half eternity can appear identical to a full eternity.
Three-Quarter Eternity
A compromise: diamonds cover approximately 75% of the band, leaving only the inner palm-side portion in plain metal. This option provides nearly the full visual impact of a complete eternity while retaining some resizing flexibility.
Setting Styles
Shared Prong
Each diamond shares prongs with its neighbors, minimizing metal visibility and maximizing the diamond surface area. This creates the most brilliant appearance, as light enters and exits each stone with minimal obstruction. Shared prong eternity bands are the most popular choice for their balance of beauty and security.
Channel Set
Channel settings hold diamonds between two parallel metal walls, creating a smooth, sleek surface with no prongs. This is the most durable and low-maintenance option — no prongs to catch on fabric, and the metal walls protect the diamond edges. Ideal for active lifestyles.
Bezel Set
Each diamond is individually surrounded by a thin metal rim. Bezel-set eternity bands have a distinctly modern, architectural look. They offer excellent protection for the diamonds and a comfortable, snag-free profile. The metal between stones is more visible than in shared-prong settings, creating a deliberate pattern of diamond and metal.
Micro-Pavé
Very small diamonds (typically 0.01-0.05 carats each) are set incredibly close together with minimal metal visible. Micro-pavé eternity bands create a delicate, shimmering effect that's different from the bold brilliance of larger-stone eternity bands. They're perfect for stacking or as wedding bands beside engagement rings.
Bar Set
Small metal bars separate each diamond, creating a rhythmic pattern of stone-bar-stone. This setting offers excellent diamond security while providing a unique visual aesthetic that's more structured than shared prong but more open than channel settings.
Choosing Your Diamonds
For eternity bands, consistency is paramount:
- Cut: All diamonds should match in cut quality. One dull stone breaks the entire band's rhythm
- Color: Stay within one color grade for all stones. Even a slight mismatch is noticeable in a continuous line of diamonds
- Clarity: VS2 to SI1 is the sweet spot. Individual stones are small enough that lower clarity grades remain eye-clean
- Size: Common stone sizes range from 0.03ct (delicate) to 0.25ct (bold) per stone. A full eternity band with 0.10ct stones in size 7 contains approximately 20-22 diamonds
Sizing Considerations
Eternity bands require special attention to sizing:
- Size up slightly: Eternity bands with diamonds on the inside can feel tighter than plain bands of the same size. Half-size up from your standard ring size
- Account for finger swelling: Fingers fluctuate throughout the day. Measure at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest
- Consider your hand dominant side: Your dominant hand is typically slightly larger than your non-dominant hand
- Full eternity resizing: If you choose a full eternity band, be very confident in your size. Some jewelers offer exchange programs rather than resizing
Wearing and Stacking
Eternity bands are among the most stackable ring designs. Classic combinations:
- Engagement ring + eternity band: The eternity band as a wedding band, sitting flush against the engagement ring
- Multiple eternity bands: Stack 2-3 thin eternity bands in different metals or stone sizes for a contemporary look
- Mixed widths: Alternate between micro-pavé and wider channel-set bands for visual texture

When stacking eternity bands, ensure the total stack height doesn't exceed your comfort zone. More than 3-4 bands can become uncomfortable and catch on clothing.
