Why Certification Matters
A diamond without certification is like a house without an inspection report — you're relying entirely on the seller's claims. Diamond certification (also called a grading report) is an independent, objective assessment of a diamond's quality by a trained gemologist. For lab-grown diamonds, certification is particularly important because it confirms the diamond is genuine lab-grown (not a simulant) and provides an unbiased quality evaluation.
The Major Certification Labs
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
Founded in 1975 in Antwerp, Belgium, IGI is the world's largest independent gemological laboratory. It has become the dominant certifier for lab-grown diamonds, grading the majority of lab-grown diamonds in the global market.
Reputation: IGI was one of the first major labs to embrace lab-grown diamond grading, establishing comprehensive standards specifically for the lab-grown market. Their grading is generally considered reliable and consistent.
Report includes: Shape and cutting style, measurements, carat weight, color grade, clarity grade, cut grade (for rounds), polish and symmetry grades, fluorescence, proportions diagram, clarity plot, and growth method (HPHT or CVD). Reports clearly state "LABORATORY GROWN DIAMOND" prominently.
Best for: Lab-grown diamonds specifically. IGI has the most experience and highest volume in this segment.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
Founded in 1931, GIA is universally regarded as the gold standard in diamond grading. GIA created the 4Cs grading system and the International Diamond Grading System that all other labs now follow.
Reputation: The most trusted and conservative grading lab. GIA grades tend to be stricter — a GIA "G" color may be graded "F" at another lab. This conservatism means you can trust that a GIA grade is genuine.
Report includes: All standard information plus detailed proportion analysis, fluorescence assessment, and any detectable treatments. GIA lab-grown diamond reports use a different format than natural diamond reports and clearly state "Laboratory-Grown Diamond."
Best for: Buyers who want absolute confidence in grading accuracy. GIA certification typically carries a slight price premium but provides the highest market trust.
GCAL (Gem Certification & Assurance Lab)
A New York-based lab founded in 1998, GCAL distinguishes itself with a unique guarantee: they will buy back any diamond that doesn't match their grading report at the appraised value. This zero-tolerance guarantee is unmatched in the industry.
Reputation: Highly respected, particularly for their accuracy guarantee. GCAL uses advanced imaging technology to provide one of the most detailed reports available.
Report includes: Standard grading information plus GCAL's proprietary Optical Brilliance Analysis — an objective, light-performance measurement that goes beyond traditional cut grading. Also includes magnified images and a light performance map.
Best for: Buyers who value light performance data and the assurance of a guaranteed-accurate grade.
How to Read a Diamond Grading Report
Every grading report includes these key sections:
Identification
- Report number: A unique identifier for the diamond. Use this to verify the report on the lab's website
- Date: When the grading was performed
- Origin: "Laboratory Grown" or "Lab-Grown" — this confirms the diamond's origin
- Growth method: HPHT, CVD, or post-growth treated
Diamond Grades
- Shape and cutting style: Round Brilliant, Oval Modified Brilliant, Emerald Step Cut, etc.
- Measurements: Dimensions in millimeters and depth percentage
- Carat weight: Measured to the hundredth of a carat
- Color grade: D through Z on the standard scale
- Clarity grade: FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3
- Cut grade (rounds only): Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor
Additional Information
- Polish: Quality of the diamond's surface finish
- Symmetry: How precisely the facets are aligned and shaped
- Fluorescence: Whether the diamond emits visible light under UV
- Inscription: Many lab-grown diamonds have a laser inscription on the girdle matching the report number
Verifying Certification
Always verify a grading report independently:
- Check the report number on the certifying lab's website (IGI, GIA, or GCAL all have online verification tools)
- Confirm the details match: carat weight, color, clarity, measurements
- Verify the diamond's laser inscription matches the report number (visible under 10x magnification)
- Be wary of reports from unknown labs — some obscure labs have less consistent or inflated grading
IGI vs GIA vs GCAL: Which Should You Choose?
All three labs produce reliable grading reports. The choice depends on your priorities:
- Choose IGI for the widest selection of certified lab-grown diamonds and competitive pricing
- Choose GIA for the most conservative, universally trusted grading (ideal for significant purchases)
- Choose GCAL for guaranteed grading accuracy and detailed light performance analysis

Regardless of which lab certified your diamond, what matters most is that it is certified. An uncertified diamond, no matter how beautiful, carries unnecessary risk.
