How to Care for Fine Jewelry: A Lifetime Guide

Fine jewelry is engineered for permanence. Gold doesn't rust. Diamonds don't scratch. Platinum barely wears. Yet every piece benefits from mindful care — not because it's fragile, but because the small gestures of maintenance preserve the brilliance that made you fall in love with it.

Daily Habits That Protect Your Jewelry

Put your jewelry on last. After perfume, hairspray, lotion, and sunscreen have settled. Chemical residues build up on metal and stone surfaces, dulling their appearance over time. This single habit prevents 90% of the grime that makes jewelry look tired.

Take it off first. Before the gym, the pool, the shower, and sleep. Chlorine attacks gold alloys. Sweat accelerates tarnishing. And sleeping with rings risks catching prongs on bedding, which can loosen settings over time.

Store pieces separately. Diamonds will scratch gold. Gold will scratch silver. Even pieces of equal hardness can damage each other. Individual soft pouches or lined compartments in a jewelry box prevent contact damage.

Cleaning at Home

Most fine jewelry responds beautifully to the simplest cleaning method:

  1. Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Soak the piece for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Gently brush with a soft-bristle toothbrush, paying attention to the back of stones and underneath settings where oils collect.
  4. Rinse under warm running water (plug the drain first).
  5. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Air dry completely before storing.

This works for diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and most hard gemstones in gold or platinum settings. Avoid this method for pearls, opals, emeralds, and turquoise — these require specialized care.

Gemstone-Specific Care

Diamonds

Virtually indestructible, but they attract grease like magnets. The oils from your skin collect on the bottom facets (the pavilion) and progressively dull the stone's sparkle. Clean every two weeks with the soap-and-water method above.

Emeralds

Most emeralds are treated with oils or resins to enhance clarity. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or steamers — they strip these treatments. Clean with a damp cloth only. Avoid temperature shocks.

Sapphires & Rubies

Extremely durable (9 on the Mohs scale). Safe for soap-and-water cleaning and even ultrasonic cleaners, unless the stone has significant inclusions or has been fracture-filled.

Gold

Gold itself doesn't tarnish, but the alloy metals in 10K and 14K gold can oxidize over time, especially with exposure to chlorine, sulfur, or salt water. Regular gentle cleaning maintains its luster. Rose gold's copper content makes it slightly more prone to surface darkening — clean more frequently.

Professional Maintenance

Once a year, have a jeweler inspect your pieces — especially rings. They'll check:

  • Prong integrity — Worn or bent prongs risk losing your stone.
  • Setting tightness — Stones should not move or rotate.
  • Band thickness — Years of wear thin the metal. Catching it early prevents structural failure.
  • Rhodium replating — White gold pieces may need replating every 1-2 years to maintain their bright finish.

At Diavlia, we offer complimentary cleaning and inspection for the lifetime of any piece purchased from us. Consider it our way of ensuring your jewelry looks as extraordinary on your anniversary as it did on the day you first wore it.

What to Avoid

  • Ultrasonic cleaners at home — Unless you know exactly what you're doing. They can loosen settings and damage treated stones.
  • Bleach and harsh chemicals — Chlorine and ammonia attack gold alloys. Even household cleaning products can cause damage.
  • Wearing jewelry in hot tubs or pools — Chlorine is particularly destructive to gold and can permanently discolor it.
  • Storing unworn jewelry for extended periods without protection — Anti-tarnish strips in your jewelry box slow oxidation significantly.

The best jewelry care isn't complicated — it's consistent. A few mindful habits protect an investment that was designed to last forever.
