Diamond Shapes Compared: Which One Is Right for You?

The shape of a diamond is the first thing anyone notices and the last thing anyone forgets. It's the single decision that most defines your ring's character. Two diamonds of identical quality can feel entirely different depending on whether they're round or emerald, oval or pear.

Round Brilliant

The benchmark. 57 or 58 facets engineered for maximum light return. The round brilliant has been mathematically optimized over a century to deliver the most sparkle of any diamond shape. It's the most popular choice (roughly 50% of all diamonds sold) and carries a premium — you're paying for the material lost during cutting and for proven, consistent beauty.

Best for: Anyone who wants maximum sparkle and a timeless look that never dates. When in doubt, round brilliant is the safe, stunning choice.

Oval

The modern classic. An elongated round with similar brilliance but a more contemporary silhouette. Ovals face up approximately 10% larger per carat than rounds and create a lengthening effect on the finger. They also cost 20-30% less per carat than equivalent rounds.

Watch for: The "bow-tie effect" — a dark area across the center of poorly cut ovals. Always evaluate ovals with high-quality images or video to ensure even light distribution.

Best for: Buyers who want round-level sparkle with a more distinctive, flattering shape at better value.

Emerald Cut

The architect's diamond. Long, rectangular facets create dramatic flashes of light (called "hall of mirrors" effect) rather than the sparkle of brilliant cuts. Emerald cuts are about sophistication, not fireworks. They reveal clarity more readily — step cuts have large, open facets — so higher clarity grades (VS2 or above) are recommended.

Best for: Someone who values clean lines, art deco aesthetics, and understated elegance over maximum sparkle.

Pear

The individualist. A teardrop shape that combines the brilliance of a round with a unique, tapered point. Pear shapes appear larger per carat and create a dramatic visual statement. The orientation matters — worn with the point toward the fingertip, it elongates; worn east-west, it creates a contemporary accent.

Best for: Someone who wants a distinctive ring that stands out from the crowd without sacrificing brilliance.

Cushion

The romantic. Soft, rounded corners with brilliant faceting create a pillow-like shape that combines vintage charm with modern sparkle. "Crushed ice" cushions have smaller, more fragmented facets; "chunky" cushions show broader flashes of light. Both are beautiful — it's a matter of personal preference.

Best for: Vintage-inspired designs, halo settings, and anyone who appreciates softness over sharp geometry.

Princess

The geometric. A square brilliant cut that delivers excellent sparkle in a modern, angular silhouette. Princess cuts typically cost less per carat than rounds because the cutting process retains more of the rough diamond. The pointed corners require protective settings (V-prongs or bezels) to prevent chipping.

Best for: Someone who wants brilliant sparkle in a decidedly contemporary, non-traditional shape.

Marquise

The maximizer. The marquise shape has the largest face-up area of any diamond shape per carat weight. Its elongated form with pointed ends creates an illusion of greater size and dramatically lengthens the finger. A well-proportioned marquise can appear 15-20% larger than a round of the same carat weight.

Best for: Maximum perceived size per carat, and a vintage-meets-modern aesthetic that's genuinely unique.

Price Comparison (Approximate per Carat)

With identical quality grades, here's how shapes typically compare in price (round = 100%):

  • Round Brilliant: 100% (reference)
  • Oval: 70-80%
  • Emerald: 65-75%
  • Cushion: 65-75%
  • Princess: 60-70%
  • Pear: 65-75%
  • Marquise: 55-70%

These are generalizations — actual prices vary by specific stone, but the pattern is consistent: fancy shapes offer more diamond for your money.
